Funny Names for Time of the Month

Did you know that cows, cranberries and communists have all been used to describe periods somewhere in the world? Find out the top 20 funny ways to say you're on your period, and why you should consider not using them.

Did you know that cows, cranberries, and communists have all been used to describe periods somewhere in the world?  You might be familiar with "shark week" or "Aunt Flo," and there are more names where that came from. Period euphemisms and slang have been around forever. Periods are a taboo subject, and people who experience them have used these terms for years as a way to refer to their cycles because of it.

We're all about opening up and being real about your period — and while KT can get behind a clever turn of phrase in the right context, we also want you to understand when it's important to use accurate terminology and why there's no shame in referring to your cycle by its real name.

Why call it a period?

The word period is rooted in the Greek words "peri" and "hodos," which translates to "around" and "way/path." This eventually transitioned into the Latin word "periodus," meaning "recurring cycle." Interestingly, the English word we all know, period, wasn't actually used until about the early 1800s to describe a person's menstrual cycle.

Why we use slang when talking periods

The euphemisms used to describe your period go even further back than the 19th century. In the 17th century, both those who experienced periods and those who didn't described menstruation by referring to a period cycle as "them" or "those." Since then, there have been tons of different words or phrases to describe being on your period without actually saying it.

We're not here to say don't use slang — it can be fun! But remember that there is nothing wrong with saying it how it is, especially when talking to a professional about your health and well-being. Periods are normal and should be talked about. Still figuring out how to be comfortable with talking about periods? We have a guide for that. So, whether you're looking for phrases to use regularly for comfort reasons or you're just curious, we've got you covered.

Period euphemisms from around the world: menstrual words you didn't know

The period-tracking app Clue conducted a survey back in 2016 involving 90,000 people across 190 countries. The app asked participants about their favorite period euphemisms — resulting in a list of 5,000 different phrases, each with their own uniqueness.

In Denmark, one of the common phrases for a period is "there are communists in the funhouse." In Finland, people prefer the term "mad cow disease." Somewhere in the world people refer to periods as "birthing a blood diamond," but the origin for that specific period slang term was unknown. As much fun as it would be to type out 5,000 different period phrases, we've narrowed the list to 20 of the most creative period slang terms — some new terms, some old.
